When you book car transport, the first choice you make is the type of carrier. Both open and closed (enclosed) carriers move cars safely, but they differ in cost, protection and availability. Here is a simple comparison to help you choose.
What Is an Open Car Carrier?
An open carrier is a double-deck truck that carries several cars at once without side walls or a roof. It is the most common way to move cars in India. Cars are loaded with ramps and locked with wheel straps.
- Pros: lower cost, more frequent departures, available on almost every route.
- Cons: the car is exposed to dust, rain and small stone chips.
What Is a Closed (Enclosed) Car Carrier?
A closed carrier is a covered container truck that usually carries one or two cars. The car is fully protected from weather and road debris and is secured with soft straps.
- Pros: maximum protection, ideal for luxury and new cars, more privacy.
- Cons: higher cost and fewer departures, so it needs to be booked earlier.
Open vs Closed Carrier: Side-by-Side
| Factor | Open Carrier | Closed Carrier |
| Cost | Lower | Roughly 1.5 – 2× higher |
| Protection | Good | Excellent |
| Availability | Frequent | Limited, book early |
| Best for | Hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs | Luxury, new, vintage and sports cars |
Which Carrier Should You Choose?
- Choose an open carrier for everyday cars when budget matters.
- Choose a closed carrier for luxury, imported, brand-new or vintage cars.
- Consider a closed carrier during the monsoon for dark or premium cars.
Typical Prices
Open-carrier charges usually range from ₹4,000 – ₹6,500 for a hatchback up to 300 km to ₹20,000 – ₹28,000 for an SUV over 1,800 km. Closed-carrier transport for luxury cars typically ranges from ₹9,000 – ₹15,000 for short routes to ₹32,000 – ₹45,000 for very long routes. See city-wise prices for Gurgaon, Mumbai and Bangalore.
How Cars Are Loaded on Each Carrier
On an open carrier, cars are driven up ramps onto two decks and fixed with wheel straps or chains. Up to 6–8 cars may travel together, and the carrier makes several stops to load and unload. On a closed carrier, the car is usually loaded with a hydraulic tail-lift, secured with soft straps and travels with fewer stops, which also reduces handling.
Does Insurance Differ Between the Two?
Transit insurance is available for both types. The premium is based on the declared value of your car, so it is not really the carrier type that changes the premium. What changes is the risk of minor cosmetic damage — which is much lower in a closed carrier.
Questions to Ask the Transport Company
- How many cars will travel on the carrier with mine?
- Is the car loaded by ramp or by hydraulic lift?
- Will the car be moved to another truck at any hub on the way?
- How soon do you need the booking for a closed carrier on my route?
Whatever You Choose, Do These Three Things
- Get a photo inspection report at pickup.
- Add transit insurance.
- Do a joint inspection at delivery before signing.
