A good plan turns moving day from chaos into a calm, organised day. Use this household shifting checklist to know exactly what to do and when — from four weeks before the move to your first night in the new home.
4 Weeks Before the Move
- Fix your moving date and book household packers and movers after comparing written quotes.
- Declutter room by room: sell, donate or discard what you do not need.
- Decide if you need car or bike transport or storage.
- Inform your landlord or society and apply for any NOC your building needs.
- Start using up frozen food and pantry items.
2 Weeks Before the Move
- Update your address with the bank, Aadhaar, PAN, insurance and online shopping accounts.
- Arrange disconnection and new connections for electricity, gas, internet and DTH.
- Collect school transfer certificates and medical records.
- Book a lift and parking slot at both buildings if needed.
- Confirm the inventory and moving date with your movers.
1 Week Before the Move
- Pack an essentials bag for each family member: clothes for 3 days, medicines, chargers, toiletries and documents.
- Defrost and dry the refrigerator 24 hours before moving day.
- Disconnect and drain the washing machine and RO purifier.
- Take photos of how your TV and computer cables are connected.
- Keep cash, jewellery and important papers aside — carry them yourself.
Moving Day
- Be present when packing starts and check the inventory list.
- Make sure every carton is labelled with the room and contents.
- Check cupboards, lofts and balconies before the truck leaves.
- Note the meter readings and hand over the keys.
- Save the driver’s and coordinator’s numbers.
At Your New Home
- Guide the team on where each room’s cartons go.
- Check furniture and appliances before signing the delivery receipt; note any damage.
- Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first.
- Let appliances like the fridge stand for a few hours before switching them on.
Room-by-Room Packing Checklist
